Gielly Green Haircut Experience!

After our recent blog post reviewing the Gielly Green repair shampoo and hair mask (which you can read here), We were lucky enough to be invited into the salon for a cut and blow dry! We sent lovely London based girlie, Kate Gowing.

Kate reports, I went last week and was really excited to see what they would do with my lifeless and very flat hair, and I am thrilled with the finished look - my hair has been given a whole new level of vitality and femininity.

The salon - based on George Street - is gorgeous and chic, spacious with a luxury interior, giving it a sophisticated vibe. Upon arrival I was greeted by really friendly staff, one of whom kindly showed me around the salon. The salon not only offers hairdressing, but also includes beauty rooms with an array of treatments available. Gielly Green has also recently made the addition of a Shavata Brow Studio and Lash Lounge which is very exciting, with threading, tints, lashes and so on available. So your trip to the salon can transform you in an abundance of ways!

I had my hair cut by the amazing Fred Gielly, who is without a doubt the nicest guy I have met in the business and it was a real pleasure to have my hair cut by him. Before the cut, I went through the shampoo/conditioner/head massage process (which almost made me fall asleep) using the gloriously smelling Gielly Green products, this was a lovely experience in itself, and in fact I was lying down having this done which made it extra comfy and enjoyable!
I was a little unsure of how I wanted my hair cut but I knew I wanted more body and life to it, so I let Fred work his magic and sat watching the transformation. I was so thrilled with the outcome, with the addition of layers and a fringe cut in, my hair had so much more bounce and volume to it, exactly what I wanted.
The way my hair was blow dried was something I thought I could never achieve at home, but after my cut the salon told me that Fred had posted a 'how to' YouTube video about creating the perfect blow dry - excellent. You can see the video along with lots more hints, tips and information about the salon here.

Loved, loved, loved every aspect of my time in this welcoming and warm salon. Anyone living or passing by London should definitely check it out. I know I will be going back!

A bit of Daniel Sandler Love

We are loving pretty much everything from the Daniel Sander range at the moment, we did a post a few months back showing a few highlights from the range which you can see here, but I thought I would give a shout out to a couple of products that we seem to be using non-stop.

The amazing Watercolour Blushes which are such an innovative and fresh approach to blusher. As you can see from the picture, the blush comes in a thin liquid form and you can either apply it directly to the face with fingers or with a brush, you are left with a hassle free gloss of colour on the cheek that is non-sticky, buildable and makes the skin look instantly radiant and healthy. Only a little of the product is needed to achieve a beautiful glowing look, so this bottle will last you for months and months. The two colours here are Cherub on the left, and Gentle on the right and are available for £14.50 each.

The other shout out goes to the Invisible Radiance Foundation and Concealer which is so utterly fantastic and one of the most handy duos I've come across lately. From the top picture, you can see that the lid of the foundation flips open to reveal a corresponding concealer with a mirror to go with it. This essentially means that you can create a flawless, even and luminous look all in one product. The foundation itself is great, it gently reflects light making skin appear healthy and fresh, it has a lightweight formula so it sits on the skin comfortably and lasts on the skin too. I like how the packaging includes a curved brush which acts as a scoop making it simple to get the product out, right to the last drop.

The concealer is tailor made to match the foundation perfectly, it has a rich and creamy formula which means it easily covers dark circles and eradicates signs of fatigue and balances out skin tone. Both products are totally paraben free (honeysuckle oil is used to preserve instead) and you can even mix a bit of the concealer with the foundation if you want a heavier finish. The foundation and concealer duo is available for £28.00 and is definitely worth checking out.

Daniel's website is worth checking out too, for more information about Daniel and to look at all the products  www.danielsandler.com

If you are really lucky you can catch Daniel doing a masterclass with his products on QVC, but I warn you to hide your credit card because Daniel makes it look so easy that a fortune could be easily spent... Last week I nearly bought products I already own!

Laura Mercier Bonne Mine Crème Colour Palette

Nic and I decided that we loved this palette the moment we saw it. We are both fans of creme products although perhaps this is the kind of product that is suited to the summer. Either way, the palette is brilliant and versatile.
You may be able to see the little black tabs above the mirror (see below) These tabs can be pulled out to reveal excellent instructions, tips and tricks on how to use this lovely palette.

The palette is inspired by Laura Mercier's work with celebrity clients, in particular Sarah Jessica Parker.
The Story goes that Sarah walks into a shoot ready for make-up and pulls out a homemade palette featuring a bunch of her favourite LM products crushed into one place... Cue Laura's brain ticking. Apparently, SJP received the first of these palettes ever made.

What they say
'This ultra-sheer, blendable palette was inspired by Laura’s work with celebrity clients, who wanted a universal compact that would “wake up” their skin and give them an immediate healthy glow.  From bronzer, to cheek colour, to glow, it’s easy to customize any look. The palette provides a finished effect – skin has a natural “no-makeup” glow that looks soft and sun-kissed. The built-in mirror and step-by-step instruction tabs allow for easy portability.'

Crème colour palette includes:
  • 1 bronzer veil
  • 2 glow veils
  • 2 cheek veils

PRICE: £35

I love... activity books.

Danny is in my good books (literally) because yesterday he bought me this book from a brilliant little store in Norwich called Knotty Green (sadly no website).
What an inspiring book! Every page features an activity, from designing a handbag to creating hairstyles and of course colouring in.
Collaborators include Marimekko, Marc Jacobs, Vivienne Westwood, Costume National, Shu Uemura and Salvatore Ferragamo.

Chanel - Rouge Allure Extrait De Gloss

Available from 1st October 2010
Chanel - Pure Shine Intense Colour Long Wear Lip Gloss - £22.50
These glosses come in 9 shades of which I have 7 (shown below).

In the past month I have been swapping between Insolence and Imaginaire because I can never get enough of pink gloss.
These glosses feel absolutely lovely on the lips and because they are Chanel the packaging is typically simple and stylish.
They come in a weighty opaque black square glass tube with a unusual 'V' shaped wand which makes application easy and somehow luxurious.
I wanted to keep applying it but there was no need because the product itself is very long wearing.
Totally recommend.

Note: I was wearing Imaginaire in the Waterproof Mascara video.

Questions and Answers from Make-up Artist Maggie Hunt

If I could have a pound for every time someone asked me why I became a make up artist I would probably have about £30.... Ok, so I wouldn’t be rich but £30 is better than nothing.
Both Sam and I were inspired to become make-up artists by Maggie Hunt, who also happens to be our auntie (handy).
So I decided to ask my Auntie Maggie a few questions about her life as a make up artist.
BIOGRAPHY
MAGGIE HUNT is a leading name in the fashion and beauty industry, working with top photographers like David Bailey, Terry O’Neill, Lord Snowdon and directors such as Gerard de Thame, Joe Pykta and Tony Kaye.  Maggie’s make-up has appeared on covers including Vogue, Harpers, Tatler, Brides, Elle, Cosmo, Company, The Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph.
This is just a few of the high profile people Maggie has worked with.
The (late and great) Princess of Wales.
HRH The Prince of Wales
Gillian Anderson
Kate Beckinsale
Honor Blackman
David Bowie
Pierce Brosnan
Shakira Caine
Naomi Campbell
Belinda Carlisle
Julie Christie
Abigail Clancy
Simon Cowell
Cindy Crawford
Dame Judi Drench
Agness Deyn
Paul & Linda McCartney
Janet Jackson
Check out Maggie’s website for more info and images; www.Maggiehunt.net
Maggie Hunt Questions and Answers.
1.How many years have you been a make up artist for?
I’ve been a make-up artist for 30 years yet I’m still as passionate about it now as I was at the beginning of my career.
2. How did you get into make up?
I became a fashion model in the sixties. I was truly inspired by the make-up of the swinging sixties and models such as Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy; I could relate to these young and successful girls.  During this period most photographic shoots did not include a make-up artist, hairdresser or stylist so I was required to be a ‘Jack of all Trades’.  Make-up changed dramatically from big wide eyes and pale lips to dark eyes and dark lips (Biba inspired).  Then the feeling moved on to romantic and then punk.  It was around the punk era that I decided to put my creative flair to good use but I wanted to do it properly as you are only given one chance, so make-up school was on the cards for me.
3. What has been your best job to date?
It is not so much what I perceive to be my best job but the perception of others, so in this case I would have to say having done the make-up of The Princess of Wales and HRH The Prince of Wales for their official engagement photographs shot by Lord Snowdon which where used globally on and in every magazine plus postage stamps.

4. Can you tell us 5 of your favorite products and why you love them?
I would prefer to say that without the use of great make-up brushes you can not achieve glorious make-up. With the use of my choice of brushes I'm able to create beautiful make-up, with all make-up, irrespective of price.
Maggie Hunt Make-up brushes at www.maggiehunt.net

5. Who/What inspires you?
I'm mostly inspired by photographers and their work rather than catwalk make-up but I'm also influenced by films and pop videos.
To name but a few these are some great photographers whose work has inspired me over the years - Steven Miesel, Guy Bourdin, Paolo Roversi, Helmut Newton, Sarah Moon, Barry Lategan, Nick Knight.
Great make-up artists that I have admired over the years - Barbara Daly, Francois Nars, Serge Lutens, Pat McGrath.

6. Who is the nicest person you have worked with?
I do like Paul McCartney and Sarah, The Duchess of York as they are both kind and genuine people but I also work with some really nice models too.

7. How did you get so successful?
It is a combination of many different qualities and not just creativity. As a model I watched many talented make-up artists work and I also watched many untalented make-up artists work so I was able to compare and understand the different emotions a model and myself included would go through with the application of amazing make-up and ugly make-up.  So I knew my aim was not just to please myself but also to please the person I was making up.  Yet, it isn’t only that, to success you need to be liked and wanted because of your talent, professionalism, dedication, hard work, self-belief, organization, modesty, kindness and these qualities cannot be learnt; methods can be taught, products can be brought but the rest is down to your personality.
8.What do you think is the most difficult thing to do as a make up artist?
There is not much that I’m fazed by as a make-up artist and I love going out of my comfort zone to create looks that I’m truly proud.  However the realms of make-up are very broad and I do not venture into an area that I do not cover such as prosthetics.

9. What do you think about your nieces following in your footsteps?
I feel honored that my nieces have wanted to follow in my footsteps; they have the perfect attitude and on top of that they have captured a market which has propelled them into an area that was untouched until now. Although they are both still young they have many years of experience, which has built them into who they are today. Samantha and Nicola are focused on succeeding and with their determination and hard working ethics they will arrive and that pleases me. my sister (their mum) and all the family, which gives encouragement to the younger members of the family and hopefully to all those trying to make it in the world today.

10. Have you got any advise for people starting out?
It doesn’t happen over night, never give up learning, confidence is good, arrogance is not, live and breath make-up, patience is a virtue and dedication is paramount.

Designer discounts

If you have followed this blog for a while you will know that I love a designer bargain. Actually, I am using the word 'Bargain' in its loosest possible term. What I should say is half price or less because even at half price some of these items can hardly be described as bargains.

Here are my favourite online shops.
Flannels Fashion
The clearance section of this website is vast and absolutely brilliant.
Gucci Slouch Boot £695 £295

Gucci luxe court £395 £195

Miu Miu boots £525 £195

Charlotte Olympia platform shoe boot £625 £250

Galliano kimono sleeve dress £740 £350

Temperley lace insert dress £765 £395

Next up is Cocosa.com
This is a members only sale website but anyone can join.
There are excellent sales on here and I have seen Alexander McQueen bags going for under £200. When a sale opens you had better get in quick because it sells out almost immediately. Also check delivery dates because sometimes there is quite a wait due to shipping from abroad.

I also check out CatfishWomen for deals on Vivienne Westwood, Anglomania, Sonia Rykiel, Diesel and McQ
The Vivienne Westwood site can also be excellent when there is a sale on.

In the past I have bought from all these sites but not regularly as although they are 'bargains' they are still a lot of money.

Make-up Mavericks

Even though make-up artists are responsible for the execution of most of the looks that these celebrities wear, for me it is the strength of personality behind the make-up that really makes them look so dynamic.
Few people wear strong make-up with this amount of confidence.
