_______________________________________________

From David Byrne’s Publishers/Penguin Group (USA)/Viking:

Bicycle Diaries is David Byrne's celebration of seeing the world from the seat of a bike. Byrne has been riding a bike as his primary means of transportation since the early 80s, at home in NY and on tour overseas. Through a behind-the-handlebars point of view, he describes why cities are physical manifestations of our deepest beliefs and unconscious thoughts, not so much as individuals, but as social animals. In Bicycle Diaries, Byrne takes the reader on a tour across the globe from Berlin to Buenos Aires, Istanbul to San Francisco, Manila to New York) and shares his thoughts on music, urban planning, fashion, architecture, politics, globalization and much more, all through the lens of a perceptive visitor passing through at bike level.

Bicycle Diaries is due to be published on September 21.
For book purchase info: go here and here...Or better yet pedal on over to your local book dealer and purchase your copy there.

*****

I really want to go to the San Francisco to hear David Byrne speak. I will bring my book as well in hopes of getting it signed...I'm a fan of this book!

p.s. So I will be sharing my simplistic book review (more like my impressions and thoughts) right here, real soon.

End of Summer Bicycle Inspiration

(top to bottom: via cassandrathegreat, via transmogrify, photo by stephaniewilliams, unknown, via sierracore, illustration by kevin cyr brooklyn ny)

As the end of summer is upon us I thought I'd share some of my favorite summer (awesome) photos and illustrations. I hope everyone is planning some last minute getaways, picnics and care free rides out in nature.... do this before summer slips away. As for me I like the last image almost the best of all. I want to have a dreamy gypsy camper on a bike, but maybe with a bit more of a rustic look like this one.

Enjoy your summer!

Farmer's Markets, Foodie Bicycle Tours

Please note the new additions on the sidebar. Both are bicycle tour and food related.

Eat Real Festival & East Bay Bicycle Coalition-- Oakland CA

"Pedal along Oakland's waterfront and meet local culinary artisans, learn their specialties and taste their creations. Join us as we meet local purveyors of sustainable chocolate, tea, beer and wine."

Cycletourist Rallye Over Country Roads North of Boulder Colorado
"GASTRONOMIC FEEDS Created by some of the nation’s most celebrated local chefs, the “feed” stations along the course of L’Eroica Boulder are gastronomic. Energy bars and gels are replaced with vintage refreshments of our ancestral hero’s of the road: aged cheeses, antipasto, craft breads, fruits, traditional hams and Italian wines that freely flow. "

What is the world coming too? Good Food -- combo bicycle social event ride? I am so inspired!

Do you remember this post from last year? I remember being so thrilled to learn such type rides existed. Well it's time again for the Tour d' Organics in Sebastopol, CA and also now in Portland, OR.

This being a food related bicycle post, then I feel it apropos to tell you I'm off to see Julie & Julia sometime this weekend!

(photo via AP Photo)

Fashion Designer Vivienne Westwood arrives via bicycle and rolls down the 'green carpet' for the world premiere of
"The Age of Stupid"...

This was the world's first entirely eco-friendly and first solar-powered movie premiere. "The Age of Stupid" -- this is a film about a future world devastated by climate change.

I know I will be going to see this film.

p.s. I think Vivienne looks WONDERFUL!

Karl Lagerfeld - Helmet Covers - Fall 2009

Karl Lagerfeld showed these amazing helmet looks 2 days ago during Paris Fashion Week.

This first look is done in a tweed fabric. It's covering the helmet and also the jacket is done in the same tweed...

Close up of another helmet look at Karl Lagerfeld. The helmets beneath Karl's 'helmet covers' are motorcycle helmets.

What's this have to do with bicycles or bicycle fashion you may ask? Well if you are interested in fashion, ride a bicycle, wear a bicycle helmet and adore Karl Lagerfeld then take heart... wearing a helmet is tre chic. Karl says so.

If you'd like to see more 'helmet' type looks in fashion go here.

Plus you want to keep certain key pieces (like a good jacket, coat or shoes) stored at the office.

Inspired by Bicycle Designs and Innovations

Recently I attended a 25-year retrospective of important bicycle designs and innovations which were created in and around the city of Santa Cruz and shown at the Museum of Art & History. The exhibit was sponsored by The Santa Cruz Design & Innovation Center.

I also attended their bicycle industry panel discussion (and party) which included Calfee Design founder Craig Calfee, Specialized’s designer Robert Egger, Giro Helmet founder Jim Gentes, Santa Cruz Bicycle head engineer Joe Graney and Roxy Lo, designer for Ibis bicycles.

I had no idea so much bicycle innovation evolved out of this place I now call home. I have been awesomely inspired!

First I start by sharing my party pics which unfortunately are too blurry. Blame it on the delicious glass of the organic 'Wild Red' wine being served, and which I sipped too quickly on an empty stomach...silly me, I forgot to adjust my camera settings properly.

Before I forget there is the SLO film festival going on with a bike film, so please take note:
"The history of the mountain bike, KLUNKERZ, is playing at the San Luis Obispo Int'l Film Festival on Saturday, March 7th at 12:00 noon. KLUNKERZ looks at the athletes and artisans credited with the popularization of the mountain bike, but it isn't just about mountain bikes. There's something for everyone...cyclo-cross, road racing, and KLUNKING...but it's mostly about community!"

Ah, Mardi Gras...My Dream of a Bike Parade

Mardi Gras in New Orleans winded down. This got me thinking about a bicycle parade. My kind of parade, my way...I'd want Skeletons, Saints and Sinners.

My lovely Saints...hetmobiele and aaiatelier at the front of the parade. These ladies pedal and generate power to their sewing machines and sew. They offer their sewing services and transform ordinary clothing (supplied by spectators watching the parade) into works of art.

Cycle Chic Fashion Show ....Video

Yes, the video from the Cycle Chic Fashion is now available for your viewing pleasure. I'm including it here as the YouTube Video for your simplest convenience. You can also view it here at the Cycle Chic website. Good sound clips in the video about what bicycling and fashion can mean. “Cycling is fun and easy… elegant way to get around…shows how good people look on bikes.” AND if someone tells you that fashion and bicycling mixing it up together is only a 'trend', then they haven’t been paying attention to all the media swirl with countless bicycle/cycle chic references either in images or actual words.

Busy in the Studio..Getting Ready for Cycle Fashion Show...Cork, Ireland

photolink: CycleChicFashionShowExhibitors

I promise I will be posting soon again and with regularity. Right now I'm buried in my studio working away. I think I'll post pictures next of the Monarch butterflies and sweet, little migrant birds that are flying by, then stopping to rest themselves in the trees... I look out from my studio window and I am awe inspired by these creatures. So they are good company for me while I slave away.

Anyway...the photo above is the 'look' I chose to represent my designs and work overall for the upcoming Cycle Chic Fashion Show in Cork, Ireland. It happens on Nov. 1st!!!

The helmet cover in the above photo certainly is a most whimsical and fun one! Oh, and the model is Micol. She is a chef extraordinaire, hails from Tuscany, Italy and is a huge Slow Foods Advocate. She is also a fine artist and painter.

Stayed tuned....I will be back!!!

Amsterdam’s first cycled fashion show!

Thanks and tip of the bicycle helmet to Velo Mondial for announcing this event first.
The event occurred July 19th in Amsterdam...

YDU - Young Designers United will participate at the Downtown programme of the Amsterdam International Fashion Week with a special project: Amsterdam’s first cycled fashion show!

"We notice very often that our Dutch customers are looking for pieces which are not only beautiful, wearable from day to night, occasionally sexy and unique, but they should also be handy for cycling”, says Angelika Groenendijk, founder of YDU. “With Amsterdam’s first cycled fashion show we want to make a statement: Biking doesn’t necessarily mean plastic rain ponchos and rubber boots – it can be stylish and practical at the same time. YDU will present an ‘amsterdamized’ collection for women who are biking to different destinations: For the ‘ lady on her way to a first date’ or the ‘party night’, the ‘opera visit’, the ‘shopping with the girls’ experience and many more.”

Here are the photos of the event. Thanks Pascal for these photo memories!

Ireland’s BICYCLE FASHION SHOW-- Saturday 1st of November 2008

“The BICYCLE FASHION SHOW will exhibit the latest innovations of clothes, bikes, accessories and gears from local, national and European designers and artists. Our objective is to present as a stylish and fashionable way to get about.”

So if you’re going to be in Ireland, this would be a fabulous event to attend …just letting you know if you’re headed that way.
