Tutorial...
I had my tutorial today and it went really well! It was my first tutorial since being back from London so I got to talk to Julie about my new concept! We talked about my new concept, my inspiration, where I am going to go with it and what kind of imagery I will use in my designs. It was said my new concept is very current and could work really well, but I have to make sure I get the use of imagery right! This week I need to look at other people work and see how I could mix imagery and I need to draw and really gather lots of imagery to work with as next week I want to start to come up with some designs as I need to start printing very soon!
The images here are just a select few images which can represent Britain! What reminds you of British Culture/London?

Tutorial Week 1...
I had my first weekly tutorial for my new and final project at uni on Monday. This project will run right through until June and will form the work that I must have for my Final Graduate Degree Show, so very scary and important! For this project I am going to really push my work and ideas from the last project, but really develop it into a professional outcome. I will still be using florls as my theme but I am going to bring new elements into the designs. This new project will be much more focused on seasons, colour and individual collections. I am going to create a number of different collections, with different colour palettes and for different seasons but using the same theme running throughout. This will really help me when it comes to putting together my portfolio as I will be able to show a greater understanding. On this project I also would like to experiment with fabric, using both digital printing and screen printing, and I would also like to try out laser cutting. I might not use these techniques in my final designs in June but they will be a very important part of the initial experimentation and will guide me to what I want to do at the end.
This week I need to start thinking about my print designs and bring some new elements into them, as well as experiment a little with colour as I need to start getting my designs on to fabric as soon as possible. I also need to look at different brands and see at which level my work would suit, which I have now done (see images below).
So for next week I must have:
- Some idea of initial direction
- Have a sense of what I want to do
- Market Research
- Start a time-plan
- Generated some imagery

Weekly Tutorial...
Tutorial 15th November 2010
Today’s tutorial went really well, and many new ideas were brought up as to how I can go on to further develop my work. It was said that my work so far is ok and I am going in the right direction however there are some things I could do to improve the work such as play with colour, scale and the imagery I am using.
To Do For Next Week:
Play with scale and zoom in on small sections.
Could have one big flower and lots of small flowers.
Play around with colour have some very black and some very spacey and white.
Play with what is real and what is abstract.
Paint with my left hand with a stick etc.
Experiment with colour.
Some of the simpler prints look quite effective.
Do something really different with each image.
Try lots of new things.
Bring new shapes in: eg. Torn paper, shapes, squares and rectangles.
Use background colours.
Look back at summer project to use textures.
Blur imagery.
Use imagery of butterflies etc patterned wings.
Try some complicated compositions.
Try not to use same imagery.
Do a colour palette.
Make flowers look metallic, like chrome.
Paint patterns into paint bucket tool.
Paint bucket into other images/patterns.

Inspiration...
Well its that time again and I have a new project to begin! The project is a digital print project and the theme is Organic-Synthetic. For this project I think I am going to go down the more organic route and create prints made from collages of flowers and animals. I have been really inspired by the work of Abraka and Pixel Nouveau. It is worth checking out both of their websites! I have also found a lot of inspiration in flowers and animals such as tigers and deer.
Tutorial
I had my tutorial yesterday and it went quite well. The main emphasis int he tutorial was for the tutor to see where I am going with the project and what kind of imagery I am looking at and what my inspiration is. I have a wide ranger of imagery for inspiration so now its time to start drawing and taking photographs which I can then use to create collages for print designs. As for the end result of this project, I would like to come up with a range of print designs with supporting illustrations, however I am going to see where it takes me.

Tutorial...
I had my weekly tutorial today and it went better than I actually expected it would. I hadn't had the most productive week but I did however get a start on some garment flats and started to add prints to my flats which gave my tutor an insight into exactly where I am going with this project. My prints defiantly need work as do my illustrations. My illustrations also need more variety in garment. As I have already said in a previous post as part of this project I need to develop my abilities as a designer and move forward as much as I can with my work. As part of this process it was important for me to start to contact designers, companies and enter competitions, which I started to do yesterday. I have contacted a number of designers and companies and I am already in contact with one company and will be sending them some of my designs shortly. My work is going to take the form of print designs for a women's wear Spring/Summer collection. If any of my lovely followers feel that they can help me in any way with the project please do let me know.
To Do For Next Week...
- Look at t-shirts and finishings
- Work on print designs
- Do a customer profile
- Get designs together on flats to send to companies
- Enter competitions
- Think about presentation
Lots to do for next week!
ALL IMAGES ARE MINE. IF YOU PUBLISH ANYWHERE ELSE PLEASE ASK MY PERMISSION FIRST.

Tutorial - 14th December
Before the tutorial I looked over what I had done during the week. I had sourced fabric, done my fashion illustrations, my print designs, started my book pages, and photographed the 'All Saints' store window. I did everything I said I was going to do and i'd say I used my time well although I could have done more work. I feel that my progress this week has been ok, however I could have done more work.
In my tutorial we discussed my fashion illustrations, print designs, layout and what my next steps for the project are going to be. It was said that my prints in progress are looking good, I just need to submit them for screen print and digital print. We also talked about fashion illustrations. I have already done my fashion illustrations but they are too similar as I used the same figure as a template, therefore I am going to redo them using several different figures, and do them in the same style as the original template illustration I did. I need to start to draw from real graments and learn how thhey are constructed in order to improve my fashion illustrations. My page layout is also looking good so far, I need to consider how I will brand all the work.
To do by next week:
- Fashion Illustrations
- Garment Analysis
- Submit all Print Work
- Conside Branding
- Work On Pages

Tutorial...
Had my tutorial again today which went great. I now know exactly what i'm doing with this project and my work is going in the right direction. So far I have a sketchbook full of ideas and inspiration. I have a colour palette, I have sourced fabric, and started my print designs, all of which I said I would have done by this week. My original market was 'All Saints' but last week my work wasn't really fitting the 'All Saints' brand. This week I gave more thought to which brand my work could fit into and I have found a way to make it fit 'All Saints'. I am going to look at unisex clothing, and mens suits as inspiration, as in pre-war times, women would alter their husbands suits to fit them, as there was a limit on fabric. My print designs are ok aswell, I just need to play with scale and push my ideas. I said last week I wanted to bring the 'Make Do and Mend' theme back into my work, I have decided to do this with print.
So to do by next Thursday:
- Finish print designs
- Play with scale and placement print
- Screen print some small samples
- Digitally print
- Photograph sewing machines in the 'All Saints' Market Street window
- Look at unisex fashion
- Analytical drawing
- Design garments/Fashion illustrations

Tutorial - Thursday 26th November
Had my tutorial today and it went ok, however there are things which need work. For instance my illustrations, I need to analyse garments through drawing and my garment flats need to be more informative. Drawing from real garments should help with this. I am going to start working with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator with my illustrations. I also need to define my market, and work out who it is that I am designing for.
So To Do By Next Thursday:
- Start Print Ideas
- Determine Market
- Colour Palette
- Analyse garments through drawing flats
- Draw real garments
- Develop Research
- Source fabrics

Tutorial Thursday 19th November
I had my first tutorial for the current project today and I'd say it went really well! discussed my ideas with my tutor as well as my aims, my anticipated outcomes, my strategies, and my resources. My initial inspiration is still the credit crunch and 'fighting back when times are hard' and I have been looking at some ideas from the post-war era such as 'Make Do and Mend'. This has then led me on to a string of deas related to 'Make Do and Mend, and the war, military fashion and 1940's fashion. Although this seems a lot of ideas I am still going to keep them all in mind as I feel as my work proogresses the ideas will become stronger and interlink. We discussed my strenghts and how and could play on them and my weaknesses and I have decided to focus on print and illustration, and try and improve my presentation skills and pay work attention to fabric.
My plan for the week is:
- Work on my ideas and develop them into something stronger
- Look at colour, season, print, detail, market level, branding, garment shapes and fabric
- Find images of inspiration and images to back up my work
- Start Sketchbook
- Do some market Research
- Make a weekly timetable
